Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has initiated the production of the first Multi-Purpose Cargo Vessel (MPV) for Navi Merchants, Denmark.

What Happened: The commencement of production was announced on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at a plate-cutting ceremony — the cutting of the first steel plate — at Mazdock’s Mumbai facility. The event was graced by Simon Christensen, CEO of Navi Merchants, and Sanjeev Singhal, chairman and managing director of Mazdock.

Mazagon Dock has entered into a contract with Navi Merchants to design, construct, and deliver a total of 6 vessels, with a provision for 4 additional ones. Each vessel, priced at $86.05 million (approximately ₹700 crores), will have a capacity of 7500 DWT (deadweight tonnage) and will feature a hybrid propulsion drive to comply with strict emission norms.

The vessels, classified under DNV (Det Norske Veritas), will be designed as Ice Class 1B, equipped with a single screw, controllable pitch, medium-speed diesel engine, and will include Electrical Energy Storage systems. They will be capable of transporting a variety of cargoes, including dry bulk, project cargo, containers, steel products, general cargo, forest products, and hazardous cargo. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in April 2026.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after the company won a massive order worth ₹1486.40 crore from ONGC. The contract is for a pipeline replacement project to be executed on an engineering, procurement, and construction reimbursable basis.
