Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries‘ decision to hike Jio tariffs by up to 25% from July has sparked a series of memes on social media, with users mocking the Ambani family for sending out luxurious invites for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding.

What Happened: Users on social media mocked Ambani's Jio following the price hikes, with some joking that this has been announced to "fund" Ambani and Merchant's lavish wedding.

Jio's Tariff Hikes Explained: Jio has raised the prices of its monthly 2GB plan from ₹155 to ₹189, a 25% increase.

The monthly 1.5 GB/day data plan, previously priced at ₹155, will now cost ₹299. The ₹399 plan for 3GB/day will now cost ₹449.

Long-term plans have also seen similar increases.

Reliance Jio has also introduced two new services, JioSafe, a quantum-secure communication app priced at ₹199/month, and JioTranslate, an AI-powered multi-lingual communication app at ₹99 per month. These applications will be free for Jio users for a year.

Why It Matters: Within a day of Jio’s new tariff plans, Bharti Airtel also revised its mobile tariffs, increasing the rate card for both prepaid and postpaid customers.

Airtel announced a change in its mobile tariffs on June 28, 2024, citing the need for the average revenue per user (ARPU) to be above ₹300 for a sustainable business model for telecom firms in the country.

Following the footsteps of Jio and Airtel, Vodafone Idea also announced new plans for its prepaid and postpaid customers on June 28, 2024. The company stated that the new plans come with nominal changes in entry-level plans and will be effective from July 4.

These tariff hikes come amid the ongoing pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani, the son of Reliance Industries chairman, Mukesh Ambani. The lavish event, which included a luxury cruise and exclusive access to the bay area in Portofino, Italy, has sparked outrage among locals.
