CDSL Demat Account Market Share Increases To 78%

Central Depository Services Limited's (CDSL) market share in demat accounts increased and National Securities Depository Limited's (NSDL) went down. Discount brokerages like Groww, and Angel One also increased market share while Zerodha's went down.

What Happened: Motilal Oswal in a report about capital markets points out that the total number of demat accounts increased to 17.5 crore in September. The new accounts opened reached 44 lakh in September 2024.

CDSL's market share in demat accounts increased to 78% from 74% in September 2023. NSDL's market share fell to 22% in September from 26% in the previous year.

The active clients in NSE have increased 2.4% from the previous month to 4.79 crore in September 2024. The top 5 discount brokerages make up 64.5% of NSE's active clients compared to 61.9% in the previous year. In August 2024, the figure was at 64.6%.

Groww's active NSE clients increased to 1.23 crore in September from 1.19 crore in August. Zerodha's number grew to 80 lakh in September from 79 lakh in the previous month. Angel One's active clients reached 74 lakh in September from 71 lakh in August. 

While Groww's market share grew to 25.6% in the month from 25.4% in the previous month, Angel One's market share reached 15.4% from 15.3% in the same period. Zerodha's market share fell from 16.9% in August to 16.6% in September 2024.
