Tata Motors' Punch, Nexon EVs Achieve 5-Star Safety Ratings From Bharat NCAP

Tata Motors’ Punch and Nexon electric vehicles (EVs) have been awarded five-star safety ratings by the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP).

What Happened: The Tata Nexon.ev is Tata Motors’ fourth SUV, following the Tata Safari, Tata Harrier, and Tata Punch.ev, to achieve five stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories at India’s New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).

The Nexon.ev scored 29.86 out of 32 points in adult safety and 44.54 out of 49 points in child safety. The Tata Punch EV also excelled in safety assessments, scoring 31.46 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 points for child occupant protection. In specific tests, it achieved 15.71 out of 16 points in the frontal offset deformable barrier test and 15.74 out of 16 points in the side movable deformable barrier test.

The BNCAP adheres to stringent testing protocols, akin to global standards, and assesses vehicles on various parameters, including adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies. These domestic, voluntary crash tests aim to motivate automakers to manufacture safe and reliable EVs for the Indian market.

Tata Motors’ Punch has seen a significant sales surge of 70% in May 2024. Despite losing the best-selling car crown to Maruti Suzuki’s Swift model, the Punch led Tata Motors’ sales, registering 18,949 units in May 2024. However, the Nexon experienced a 21% drop in sales compared to May 2023.
