Tata Motors' 'Punch' Sees Sales Surge 70% In May, But Loses Best Selling Car Crown

Maruti Suzuki has once again emerged as the leader in India’s passenger vehicle market for May 2024, surpassing the Tata Punch, which had claimed the top spot in the previous month.

What Happened: Tata Motors’ Punch led their sales, clocking 18,949 units last month and marking a year-on-year growth of 70%. However, Tata’s Nexon failed to make the list and experienced a 21% drop in sales compared to May 2023. In April Tata Motors had sold around 19,158 units of Punch.

Maruti Suzuki’s Swift model recorded sales of 19,393 units in May 2024, indicating a 12% year-on-year (YoY) growth.

Maruti Suzuki had seven models in the top 10 best-sellers list, while Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra filled the remaining three spots. Among Maruti Suzuki’s top performers, the Swift was the sole hatchback to register a positive YoY growth, whereas the Wagon R and Baleno witnessed a decline.

Hyundai’s top seller, the Creta, reported sales of 14,662 units and a YoY growth of 1%.

On the other hand, Mahindra maintained its steady performance in the top 10 list with the sales of the Scorpio, registering sales of 13,717 units and a 47% YoY growth.
