A light post on VIP Road is obstructing the Orange Line construction. The issue was discussed at a stakeholders’ meeting last week, where RVNL was informed that the removal of the post would take some time.

What Happened: The Public Works Department (PWD), the custodian of VIP Road, and RVNL, the implementing agency for the 29 km New Garia-Airport metro corridor (also known as the Orange Line), have been grappling with this issue.

RVNL has already missed its January 2024 deadline for completing the last leg of the corridor due to various obstacles, including a hoarding put up by PWD across the width of VIP Road.

After several meetings, PWD finally replaced the hoarding with a smaller one in April this year. However, the light post continues to be a significant hurdle, necessitating urgent action for its removal to ensure smooth access to the airport via the Orange Line.

The Orange Line has faced numerous challenges. In September 2024, RVNL began construction on the Orange Line’s Metro pier, which required the slicing of a bridge connecting Salt Lake and New Town. The same month, pavement encroachment by local eateries led to design modifications for the penultimate station of the Orange Line Metro at Chinar Park.

In October, RVNL initiated the demolition of the final standing building obstructing the completion of the Orange Line.
