Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has requested the Kolkata Police for a 24-hour traffic block, a move aimed at facilitating the final phase of the Kolkata Metro expansion.

What Happened: RVNL has asked for a round-the-clock traffic block at Metropolitan on EM Bypass, as per a Times of India report. This is to complete the remaining 25m of viaduct construction from the Beleghata Metro station to Captain Bheri, thereby enabling the continuation of work towards Chingrighata.

RVNL, which is overseeing the 29km New Garia-Airport (Orange) line, has been advocating for this traffic block at Metropolitan. The objective is to extend the Orange Line by 8km to Sector V, where it will connect with the East-West Metro (Green Line).

Since June 13, RVNL has been permitted to launch girders only at night. However, for the final 25m span of the girder, some ground space is also required, hence the need for the traffic block. An official stated that without the traffic block, work towards Chingrighata cannot proceed.

The Kolkata Metro expansion has been a significant project for RVNL. In September 2024, the company began work on the Orange Line’s Metro pier, marking the start of filling the 400m viaduct gap at the New Town gateway.

Earlier in October, RVNL secured approval for a night traffic block at Chinar Park, Kolkata, a crucial step in the construction of a new metro station along the Airport-New Garia Metro corridor.
