Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has secured approval for a night traffic block at Chinar Park, Kolkata, a major step forward in the construction of a new metro station along the Airport-New Garia Metro corridor.

What Happened: RVNL has finally received the go-ahead for the traffic block, which is crucial for the metro station’s construction, as per a Times of India report. However, no specific timeline has been set for the completion of the station’s concourse.

An RVNL official estimated that the first-level casting of the station’s concourse would take at least eight months, noting that the work could have been completed in three months if the traffic block had been granted for 24 hours at a stretch.

The station is being built on a 140m×33m stretch ahead of the Chinar Park crossing in New Town. The Bidhannagar Traffic Police conducted two trials before issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to RVNL. The traffic police have asked RVNL to split the concourse slab casting into two phases and work only at night to ensure uninterrupted traffic during the day.

The station’s design had to be modified due to encroachments by some eateries on the pavement, which prevented RVNL from extending the road for traffic diversion.

On Wednesday, RVNL emerged as the lowest bidder for a metro construction project awarded by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited. The approval for the night traffic block at Chinar Park is another significant milestone in RVNL’s ongoing metro construction endeavours.
