Seven years after a corporate feud, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group (SP Group) and Tata Group could be on the path to reconciliation as Noel Tata takes the helm at Tata Trusts.

What Happened: A preliminary meeting between SP Group and Tata Group might be in the offing, the Hindu Businessline reported. The report cited an industry source, who expressed optimism that both parties could leave the past behind and find a constructive way forward.

The feud between the Tatas and SP Group began in 2016 following the removal of Cyrus Mistry as chairman of Tata Sons. The SP Group, the largest minority shareholder in Tata Sons, held an 18% stake. Following his ouster, Mistry accused Ratan Tata of meddling in Tata Sons’ operations, alleging compromised governance and decisions driven by emotion rather than sound business judgment.

With both Cyrus Mistry and Ratan Tata having passed away, and the legal dispute resolved in favour of the Tatas by the Supreme Court, the report suggested there is no reason to hold onto past grievances.

Noel Tata, known for his non-confrontational leadership style, and his familial ties to the Mistry family, could play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the two sides.

Reconciliation could alleviate financial challenges for the SP Group and enhance the response to their planned listing of infrastructure firm Afcons. However, the future of SP Group’s stake in Tata Sons, valued at over ₹3 lakh crore, remains a significant point of contention.

Following the demise of Ratan Tata, Noel Tata was appointed as chairman of Tata Trusts last week.
