Ford Motor has said it plans to restart its Chennai plant for manufacturing, aiming to shore up exports to global markets.

What Happened: The company has submitted a letter of intent (LOI) to the Tamil Nadu government seeking to resume operations, Ford said in a statement on Friday.

This decision was made following a meeting between Ford’s top brass and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his U.S. visit.

This move is a part of Ford’s ambitious Ford+ growth plan. “We are grateful for the ongoing support from the Tamil Nadu Government as we explored different options for the Chennai plant,” stated Kay Hart, president at Ford International Markets Group.

Although the specifics of the manufacturing are yet to be revealed, the announcement underscores Ford’s commitment to India as a key market for its global operations. The company currently employs 12,000 individuals in Tamil Nadu and anticipates adding 2,500 to 3,000 jobs in the next three years.

Stalin met officials from the company during his visit to the US, the politician said in a post on X.

“Had a very engaging discussion with the team from Ford Motors! Explored the feasibility of renewing Ford's three decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, to again make in Tamil Nadu for the world,” he wrote in his post.
