Veteran investor Raamdeo Agarwal is one of the most successful investors the Indian stock market has ever seen. The chairman and co-founder of Motilal Oswal is known for his long-term investing philosophy that has made him one of the richest people in the country.

During a recent podcast, the ace investor shared an interesting story about how he made incredible returns during the Harshad Mehta bull run back in the early 1990s.

Agarwal recalls that he was around 33 years old and had just begun his career in the stock market when the Harshad Mehta bull run started.

“It was the mother of all bull runs, you guys can’t even fathom what happened,” the 68-year-old added in the podcast called Exploring Minds with Shivank Joshi.

He went on to narrate that during that time, he made around ₹10 crore in just 19 months from barely any starting capital. “During that bull run, we started making money left, right and centre. In 19 months we made ₹30 crore from almost zero. In fact, I was negative ₹10 lakhs, and no speculation; I was not doing trading.”

He also narrated a story about meeting Mehta, and how he chose not to do business with him.

“Because I knew him, I could have done business with him, but I decided not to because there was a risk that I was seeing, they were very big, and we were still the small guys back then, I thought I could get in trouble. So, I decided to avoid working with him.”
