Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India’s premier institute for management studies, is often dubbed as the Harvard of India. Every year among a pool of aspirants only a few make it to the college. Now, while that is a feat in itself, what counts most is where the degree takes people in their lives.
To understand this, Debarghya (Deedy) Das, an Indian-origin tech influencer on X (formerly Twitter) analysed what toppers from 40 years ago are doing today. The former Google engineer collated the data of the toppers from the 1980-1982 batch. Interestingly, 8 of the top 10 were from India’s top engineering college, Indian Institute for Technology.
Sanjay Bhargava, Vipul Jain and Sridhar Seshadri were the top 3 gold medalists from the 1980 batch.

Sanjay Bhargava completed his engineering from IIT Bombay before joining IIM Ahmedabad. In his career spanning over 36 years, he spent 17 years at Citi, climbing to the position of Vice President. Thereafter, has held various positions at several firms. In 2021, he briefly served as the India head for Starlink. He currently serves as the principal officer and Bharosa Advisory.
Vipul Jain was an engineer from IIT Kanpur before he decided to pursue management. he has had an impressive career which started with a stint as a CIO at Taj Group. he went on to start his own consulting firm for which he dedicated 23 years. Over the years he has founded several other companies, the most recent being a venture capital firm.
Sridhar Seshadri earned his engineering degree from IIT Madras. After completing his management studies, he went on to do his PhD at University of California, Berkeley. Taking a different route than his peers, Seshadri currently works as a professor of business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the US.
1981 batch gold medalist Alok Agarwal, who is also an IIT Kanpur alumnus, dedicated his entire career to Reliance Industries climbing up to the position of CFO. He was recently replaced by V Srikanth. Agarwal now serves as a senior advisor at the conglomerate. 1982 gold medalist Jayanth Varma chose a different path. After completing his studies at IIM Ahmedabad, he joined his alma mater as a professor and has been there ever since then.
