NHPC announced on Wednesday evening that Raj Kumar Chaudhary has taken over as its new chairman and managing director.
What Happened: The Ministry of Power, Government of India, issued an order appointing Chaudhary, Director (Technical), NHPC to the post of chairman and managing director, NHPC Limited. The appointment is effective from the date of his assumption of charge until his superannuation on June 30, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Chaudhary, who has been with NHPC since 1989, assumed the charge of the post on August 7, 2024. He has held various positions within the company, including Director (Technical), and has made significant contributions to the development of hydropower in India and Bhutan.

With Chaudhary’s appointment, Rajendra Prasad Goyal, Director (Finance), NHPC, will no longer hold the additional charge of the post of chairman and managing director, NHPC.
In July 2024, the company extended the tenure of Goyal as the chairman and managing director for three months until a full-time incumbent was appointed. Goyal has been holding the additional charge as the chairman and managing director since March 2024 and has been serving as director (finance) since October 2020.
A week later, NHPC confirmed the appointment of Sanjay Kumar Singh as the new director of projects. Singh, who brings over 32 years of experience in the power and infrastructure sector, previously held the position of chief general manager at SJVN Ltd.
