Titagarh Rail Systems Limited has initiated the export of traction converters to Italy. This move is part of a EUR 7.18 million (around ₹65 crore) deal with Titagarh Firema S.p.A.
What Happened: Titagarh dispatched the first batch of eight traction converters to Titagarh Firema, Italy. The converters are manufactured at the Passenger Rolling Stock Facility of Titagarh, India.
Titagarh’s Italian associate, Titagarh Firema secured an order from Regione Lazio, Italy, to design, manufacture, and supply 38 trainsets for a total value of approximately EUR 276 Million (around ₹2,484 crore).

“Titagarh received the order from Titagarh Firema, Italy to supply traction converters for the first batch of 11 trains to the Regione Lazio Viterbo line, operating at 3 kilovolt, and the Regione Lazio Lido line, operating at 1.5 kilovolt,” the company added in the press release. Titagarh India aims to ship two train sets, or eight converters, each month to fulfil the order.
The Passenger Rolling Stock Facility of Titagarh India currently produces 25 converters per month, with plans to double this capacity.
This development comes at a time when railway stocks, including Titagarh, are experiencing a slump following the 2024 Union Budget. The budget kept capital expenditure unchanged at ₹11.11 lakh crore, leading to a downturn in railway stocks such as RVNL, IRFC, Titagarh and IRCON, which had been optimistic about potential increases in capital expenditure for railway infrastructure.
