Mukesh Ambani Reportedly Spent ₹5,000 Cr On His Son's Extravagant Wedding: Here Are 5 Things India's Richest Man Could Have Bought With That Money

Perhaps one of the most expensive affairs in the country in a long time, the hotly anticipated Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant wedding is now under after several months of festivities. Mukesh Ambani is reported to have spent ₹5,000 crore on the wedding, sending social media into a tizzy over the extravagance.

While many have been dazzled by the lavish Ambani wedding, some users have criticized India's richest family for spending a bit too much.

The Ambani wedding witnessed some of the richest and most popular people from the world show up to wish the newly-wed couple. The list includes Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Meta Platforms co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, former U.K. PM Tony Blair, and U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, among several others.

While many Bollywood celebrities also graced the Ambani wedding, there was a presence from Hollywood and the music world, too. This includes Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Drake, and John Cena, among many others.

All this came at a fairly huge cost, too, at a reported ₹5,000 crore.

For context, this is just 0.5% of the net worth of Mukesh Ambani, so it might still not matter that much to the richest Indian.

But if you are wondering what the Ambanis could buy for ₹5,000 crore, here's a list.

1. Host 10 Oscars

Hosting an Oscars ceremony costs an estimated $57 million. Ambani could host 10 Oscars and still have some money left to host another one halfway through.

2. Three Boeing 787 Dreamliners

A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is estimated to cost $212 million. At current exchange rates, ₹5,000 crore is approximately $600 million. The Ambanis could buy three Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners by putting in a few million more.

3. Acquire A Cement Manufacturer

Sanghi Industries, a cement manufacturer, was one of the first major acquisitions of the Adani Group post the Hindenburg saga, at an enterprise value of ₹5,000 crore. The Anant-Radhika wedding extravaganza could have instead funded this acquisition.

Indians spent approximately ₹5,000 crore in purchasing cosmetics over six months in 2023, according to the Kantar Worldpanel. Ambanis could have funded this in its entirety for the same amount the wedding cost them.
