Vodafone Idea Engages With Samsung For 4G, 5G Deployment

In a strategic move to enhance its network capabilities, Vodafone Idea has entered into a collaboration with Samsung for the deployment of 4G and 5G virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) solutions.

What Happened: Vodafone Idea has initiated a partnership with Samsung to roll out 4G and 5G vRAN in two circles, the company said in a statement. The primary objective of this collaboration is to augment the network capabilities of Vodafone Idea.

Over the past 12-18 months, the troubled telco has conducted network trials with Samsung in Chennai, India. Following successful trials that matched the performance of existing suppliers, Vodafone Idea has expanded Samsung deployments to the Karnataka and Bihar circles. These deployments have enabled the telecom company to meet its 5G Minimum Rollout Obligation (MRO) in Chennai, Karnataka, and Bihar using NSA vRAN architecture.

Jagbir Singh, chief technical officer of Vodafone Idea, stated, "This vRAN deployment, delivered through Samsung's innovation and joint technological strategic initiatives, aligns with our technology transformation roadmap and enriched vendor ecosystem. We see a major role ahead for hybrid architecture in delivering the network-enhanced capabilities that will push new dimensions in radio architecture."

Samsung's vRAN solution will bring flexibility, scalability, and resource efficiency to Vodafone Idea’s network management. The Korean giant has previously worked with Reliance Jio for the deployment of Jio’s 4G network in India.

The telecom company is also in discussions with Ericsson, Nokia, and Mavenir for its 4G network expansion and 5G rollout in India.

Price Action: Vodafone Idea’s share price was up 3.37% to trade at ₹17.77 on Wednesday afternoon.
