Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev extended an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for failing to adhere to its directives concerning misleading advertisements. Alongside Patanjali Ayurved’s Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna, Ramdev faced the apex court’s scrutiny after they were served notices for potential contempt proceedings.

What Happened: The Supreme Court’s ire began in March when Patanjali continued to issue advertisements, purportedly endorsed by Ramdev, which violated a previous pledge to the court. This pledge, made on November 21, 2023, was to refrain from advertising products as cures for diseases without solid backing.

Expressing his regret through his lawyer, Ramdev sought to acknowledge his and his company’s lapse before the court.

However, the justices were clear in their reprimand, emphasising the importance of adhering to court orders, and underscoring a broader message about the respect and compliance expected towards judicial mandates across the country.

What to know: This judicial standoff traces back to Patanjali’s commitments to the Supreme Court last November, promising a responsible approach towards product promotion and communication. Yet, the Supreme Court’s recent findings indicate a breach of this assurance.

The background of this confrontation includes allegations by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against Ramdev for disparaging the COVID-19 vaccination initiative and modern medicine.
