Patanjali Ayurved Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna issued an unqualified apology to the Supreme Court on Thursday regarding alleged misleading advertisements.

What Happened: Balkrishna expressed regret to the country’s apex court for breaching the statement outlined in the court’s November 21, 2023 order and assured that such advertisements would not be disseminated in the future, according to multiple media reports.

He acknowledged that the advertisement, initially intended for general information, inadvertently contained offensive content. Balkrishna clarified that this was unintentional and attributed it to the routine procedures of the company’s media department, which was unaware of the court’s order.

Company’s Claims: Moreover, Balkrishna claimed that Schedule J of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 was outdated and lacked recent updates in relevant legislation. He also asserted that Patanjali Ayurved possessed evidence-based scientific data, showcasing advancements in Ayurvedic research aimed at addressing lifestyle-related medical issues and alleviating strain on the healthcare system.

The affidavit reiterated the company’s commitment to promoting Ayurvedic products based on both traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific research.

Previously, the Supreme Court had cautioned against misleading advertisements by the company and restrained it from advertising products as remedies for specific diseases, adhering to drug regulations.

These observations came during a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) seeking guidelines in relation to allopathy and modern medicine. The IMA, with over 330,000 medical doctors as its members nationwide, expressed concerns about misinformation and disparagement of allopathy, urging strict enforcement of relevant laws against such practices by companies like Patanjali Ayurved.
