In an attempt to thwart the ongoing water scarcity and borewell mismanagement, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is turning to the smart tech duo of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT).
What Happened: During a showcase on March 25, BWSSB rolled out this tech in a central Bengaluru borewell, signalling a future where tech meets traditional water management. Out of Bengaluru’s 14,000 public borewells, the harsh summer has already dried up nearly half.
BWSSB’s chair, V Ram Prasath Manohar, shared insights with Moneycontrol on how IoT sensors will be the borewells’ new watchdogs.
These sensors will monitor water flow, relay data to the cloud, and intelligently control the water pumps — dialling them down or shutting them off as needed to conserve water and minimize manual meddling. This not only promises to keep the borewells from being overexploited but also aims to make water use sustainable.
The plan is to extend this savvy solution across all public borewells, starting with the ones still springing water. After a successful test run in five borewells, BWSSB is gearing up to bring this innovative approach to the rest, tackling the age-old challenge of water level guesswork with data-driven precision.
