Zomato Buckles To Online Backlash, Scraps Green Uniforms For 'Pure Veg' Orders

Foodtech firm Zomato has backtracked on its proposed vegetarian delivery fleet a day after announcing it, removing on-ground segregation and maintaining all uniforms as red.

What Happened: Deepinder Goyal took to Twitter to share an update on Zomato’s vegetarian delivery fleet.

He stated that while the company will continue to maintain a separate fleet for vegetarian orders, it will no longer segregate this fleet on the ground using the colour green. Instead, all delivery riders, including those serving vegetarian orders, will wear red uniforms.

Goyal explained that this decision was made to ensure the physical safety of their delivery partners. He agreed that the green uniforms could have led to delivery partners being incorrectly associated with non-vegetarian food and being blocked by certain societies or RWAs during special days.

He also acknowledged that the previous system could have caused trouble for customers with their landlords, stating, “that would not be a nice thing if that happened because of us.”

Why It Matters: This move comes after Goyal received backlash from the public regarding the unintended consequences of the company’s initial rollout of green uniforms for “pure vegetarian” food deliveries. He thanked everyone for their input, saying, “All the love, and all the brickbats were all so useful – and helped us get to this optimal point.”

Zomato received massive backlash after the move was announced on Tuesday, with people pointing out its casteist undertones and the societal problems that may emerge as a result. Goyal emphasised that Zomato is always listening to its customers and stakeholders, “without unnecessary ego or pride”.
