Amazon India Announces 198MW Renewable Energy Plant In Maharashtra

Amazon is now the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in India. The milestone comes after the e-commerce behemoth inaugurated a new 198 megawatt wind farm in Maharashtra.

What Happened: Amazon unveiled its new 198-megawatt wind farm project in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, on Monday. This marks the company’s 50th renewable energy project in India, bolstering its renewable energy capacity in the country beyond 1.1 gigawatts. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, this makes Amazon the top corporate buyer of renewable energy in India.

As per the company, between 2014 and 2022, Amazon’s wind and solar farms have collectively injected $349 million (₹2,885 crore) into India’s economy. In 2022 alone, they contributed approximately $87 million (₹719 crore) to India’s GDP and supported over 20,600 full-time equivalent jobs.

Abhinav Singh, vice president of Operations at Amazon India, highlighted that scaling renewable energy rapidly is a key strategy to tackle climate change. He further expressed Amazon’s eagerness to continue supporting India’s economic and environmental objectives, in line with Amazon’s aim to become a more sustainable business.

The Osmanabad wind farm is Amazon’s seventh utility-scale renewable energy project announced in India over the past year. Once all 50 projects are operational, they are expected to generate enough energy to power over 1.1 million homes in New Delhi annually.
