Rakesh Kunbi’s story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and a never-give-up attitude. At 29, Rakesh’s journey from delivering newspapers in the bustling streets of Mumbai to securing a coveted seat at IIM Rohtak is nothing short of inspirational.

Growing up in a family that faced financial hardships, especially after the closure of mills in 2005 which was a major source of income for his family, young Rakesh took it upon himself to support his family. At 16, while most of his peers engrossed themselves in their studies, Rakesh delivered newspapers. But his passion for learning never dimmed. He juggled work and education, ensuring neither suffered.

What to know? Rakesh’s foray into the world of catering taught him invaluable lessons about teamwork, networking, and the significance of trust in business. His stint at a call centre in Mindspace, Mumbai, while pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce from Clara’s College of Commerce, showcased his ability to balance work and studies seamlessly.

Kunbi’s corporate journey began with a role at a multinational banking company, followed by a successful tenure at Aegon Life Insurance, where he shone as the employee of the month three times in a row. He set his sights on an MBA, and with sheer determination, secured a seat at IIM Rohtak.

Today, as a part of the International Custody Coverage team at ICICI Bank in Mumbai, Rakesh reflects on his journey with pride. But he’s not just about personal achievements. Rakesh is driven by a desire to give back. He dreams of empowering underprivileged kids with education and guidance, ensuring they have the opportunities he had to fight for.

In Rakesh’s words, “The journey built an urge within me to contribute back to society.” Truly, Rakesh’s story is a beacon of hope, proving that with hard work and determination, one can overcome any obstacle.
