An ecstatic Mahindra group chief Anand Mahindra invited Bill Gates on Twitter for a "three-wheeler EV drag race" between the two businessmen and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar.
What Happened? Mahindra who was thrilled to have had Gates behind the wheels of the auto giant’s new Mahindra Treo recently shared a video of the Microsoft co-founder checking the rear-view mirror before taking the electric three-wheeler for a quick spin.
The video aptly plays a background score of "Babu Samjho Ishare" from the iconic 1958 Bollywood film "Chalti Ka Naam Gaad."
Gates in an Instagram post of his own writes, "India's passion for innovation never ceases to amaze. I drove an electric rickshaw, capable of travelling up to 131km (about 81 miles) and carrying up to 4 people. It's inspiring seeing companies like Mahindra contribute to the decarbonisation of the transportation industry."
The two billionaires talked about opportunities to collaborate on agriculture, digital finance, and climate during their recent meeting last week.
Mahindra also received a signed copy of Gates’ book titled, ‘How to Avoid a Climate Disaster’. The American philanthropist also wrote a small note on the book that read, "To Anand, Best wishes to my classmate! Bill Gates” — referring to the fact that the two were classmates at Harvard University.
Mahindra currently sells the Treo, Treo Yaari, e Alfa Mini in the electric three-wheeler passenger segment and the Treo Zor, Zor Grand and E Alfa Cargo in three-wheeler cargos.
"We have aggressive growth plans in this segment as electric three-wheelers and four-wheelers (cargo) is growing at a much faster rate than the electric passenger vehicle segment," said Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director, auto and farm sector, Mahindra & Mahindra, in a recent meeting with analysts.
