Rigetti Computing, Inc. RGTI shares are trading lower Monday as AI and quantum stocks fall amid concerns over competition from DeepSeek’s new artificial intelligence (AI) model.
The Details: The AI model called DeepSeek R1 is said to offer capabilities similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, but at a much lower cost. The model was developed for less than $6 million.
Investors may be reacting to the startup's claim of using approximately 50,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs and its implications for American technology companies that have made substantial GPU investments.
Furthermore, the Chinese startup’s reasoning model has outperformed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in several third-party tests. DeepSeek’s performance in these tests may be adding to investors concerns about the company’s competitiveness in the AI space.
“The new model is cost-effective and runs on reduced-capability chips,” Saxo analysts said. “The development raises questions about the high valuations of leading AI companies like Nvidia and the investment case for the entire AI supply chain.”
How To Buy Rigetti Computing Shares
Besides going to a brokerage platform to purchase a share – or fractional share – of stock, you can also gain access to shares either by buying an exchange traded fund (ETF) that holds the stock itself, or by allocating yourself to a strategy in your 401(k) that would seek to acquire shares in a mutual fund or other instrument.
For example, in Rigetti Computing's case, it is in the Information Technology sector. An ETF will likely hold shares in many liquid and large companies that help track that sector, allowing an investor to gain exposure to the trends within that segment.
