On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, stock exchanges announced the addition of 45 new stocks to the futures and options (F&O) segment, effective November 29.

What Happened: Major entrants include Zomato, NHPC, BSE, HUDCO, IRFC, Jio Financial, Paytm, Yes Bank, Adani Green, and Avenue Supermarts. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) stated that details regarding market lot size, strike schemes, and quantity freeze limits for these securities will be provided to members on November 28.

This inclusion allows India’s benchmark indices to integrate newer, high-growth firms listed in the past two years, as only F&O-eligible stocks can qualify for benchmark inclusion. The move signals a shift in the F&O segment, now accommodating a mix of companies including newer firms.

The expansion follows revised F&O stock eligibility criteria approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in June, with a circular issued in August. Notably, the criteria aim to enhance liquidity and attract quality stocks through requirements like market-wide position limits, median quarter sigma order size, and average daily delivery value (ADDV).

Additionally, SEBI introduced a ‘product success framework' (PSF) for stock derivatives, aligned with the framework for index derivatives, to support product viability and stability in the segment.
