E-commerce platform Meesho has come under fire for selling clothing featuring the image of imprisoned Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
What Happened: The issue was flagged by Alishan Jafri, a journalist and filmmaker. In a social media post, Jafri shared images of T-shirts being sold on Meesho’s platform for as low as ₹168. Jafri termed this as “just one example of India’s latest online radicalisation.”
Some of the T-shirts were also offered in children’s sizes, raising concerns about the potential impact of these products on younger audiences. The post attracted extensive criticism from users, with some even questioning the sale of clothing printed with images of convicted Bollywood actors.

Another user condemned the sale of the t-shirts saying, “We can’t encourage the younger generation to think of this gangster as a hero.” Several others called for the boycott of the website.
Benzinga India’s search for the item on Meesho’s website initially yielded one result. However, it was later taken down and the product was marked “out of stock”. The company told some media outlets that it had taken down the products following the backlash.
Meesho, a Bengaluru-based e-commerce platform, was founded by Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal. The company is backed by major international investors including Softbank, Prosus, Sequoia and Facebook.
