Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal took to social media platform X to issue a clarification after a recent safety inspection at the company’s Hyperpure warehouse in Hyderabad.

What Happened: Food safety officials raided a Hyperpure warehouse located in Kukatpally, Hyderabad on October 29. During their inspection, the officials reportedly found 18 kilograms of button mushrooms marked with a date of packaging in the future: October 30, 2024.

Zomato’s Hyperpure business offers end-to-end supply chain solutions for restaurants and food businesses. It provides ingredients, kitchen supplies and raw materials to its partner restaurants.

In response, Goyal said the ninety packets of button mushrooms found to have incorrect packaging dates were already identified and rejected by the warehouse team during the inward quality control check. This was due to a manual typing error on the vendor’s end and the company has already delisted the vendor from its database, Goyal said.

The recent food safety inspection at the Hyderabad warehouse resulted in the Hyperpure warehouse receiving an A+ rating, the highest benchmark in their ranking, he added.

“I am not sure why just these small number of mushroom packets worth ₹7,200 (out of the crores of inventory in the warehouse), which were never going to make it to customers, are being talked about the media, while we got an A+ rating,” the Zomato CEO retorted.

The food delivery giant’s net profit skyrocketed nearly five times to ₹176 crore in the second quarter, while revenue from operations jumped 68.5% to ₹4,799 crore.

Price Action: Zomato’s shares were down 3.21% to ₹241 on Monday morning.
