Bharti Airtel has announced the appointment of Gopal Vittal as vice chairman and Shashwat Sharma as the future CEO.

What Happened: Bharti Airtel in a press release said that Sharma who is currently the chief operation officer, is set to become the CEO of Bharti Airtel on January 1, 2026.

Vittal, who has been MD & CEO for the last twelve years will be appointed as vice-chairman of Airtel. Viittal will continue to spearhead the India business and assume wider telecom responsibilities across the group. He will also join the Board of Airtel Africa Plc as the Bharti nominee director.

During this transition phase, Vittal will mentor Sharma and ensure a smooth handover of the managing director & CEO role. Vittal will divide his time between Delhi and Bangalore and will also travel extensively to oversee the group’s operations, including those overseas.

In another significant move, Rakesh Bharti Mittal, after a 9-year tenure at Airtel, will join the boards of Indus Towers and Bharti Hexacom. Rajan Bharti Mittal will return to Airtel as the Bharti Board nominee.

Bharti Airtel announced its Q2 results on Monday. The telco’s net profit grew 168% to ₹3,593.2 crore. However, the bottom line missed the analyst’s estimates.
