Noel Tata, the recently appointed chairman of Tata Trusts, is expected to be appointed to the board of the organisation soon.
What Happened: Noel Tata will become a part of the board of directors of Tata Sons, in which Tata Trusts holds a two-third stake, according to a report by The Times Of India. If it materialises, he will be the only member of the Tata Group‘s founding family to assume positions in both Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.
Noel’s induction will take the number of Trusts’ nominees on the Tata Sons board to three — the other two being vice-chairmen Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh.

Even with Noel’s appointment as a director on the Tata Sons board, N Chandrasekaran will continue as the company’s chairman, the report said. To prevent potential conflicts of interest, Tata Sons revised its articles of association (AoA) to ensure that the same individual cannot hold the chairmanship of both Tata Sons and Tata Trusts at the same time.
On the other hand, the Economic Times reported that Noel Tata was seeking advice regarding his continued role as chairman of certain group firms following his promotion last week after the death of Ratan Tata.
Legal experts familiar with the conglomerate indicate that there are no legal or contractual barriers preventing Noel Tata from continuing to chair group companies, as it is a non-executive position.
Currently, Tata holds the positions of non-executive director and chairperson at Tata Investment Corporation, Trent and Voltas. He also serves as vice-chairperson and non-executive director at Titan Company and Tata Steel.
