The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission at Hyderabad has found Tata Motors liable for a manufacturing defect in a Tata Nexon Electric Vehicle (EV) that led to a fire incident. The Commission has ordered the company to refund the vehicle’s cost to its owner.
What Happened: The vehicle, bought in May 2022, began experiencing issues within 11 months of its delivery. Despite a battery pack replacement by Tata Motors, the car caught fire in June 2023, causing an accident that injured a motorcyclist.

The Commission concluded that the fire was due to a manufacturing defect, dismissing Tata Motors’ argument that an external crash might have triggered the fire. The parties have been directed to refund ₹16.95 lakh, the vehicle cost, along with 9% interest from filing the complaint, on September 29, 2023.
The Commission has also instructed Tata Motors, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, dealer M/s. Venkataramana Motors, and service centre M/s. Malik Cars Pvt. Ltd to collectively pay ₹2.5 lakh as compensation to the injured motorcyclist.
