British recycling firm Altilium and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are gearing up to build and test battery cells manufactured using recycled materials from old electric vehicles.
What Happened: This pilot project is designed to prove the viability of mass-producing recycled battery cells. The venture, supported by Tata Motors unit JLR, Altilium, and the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre, is scheduled to run over the next year.
“By recovering critical materials including lithium, cobalt and nickel, Altilium’s process reduces the need for newly mined materials, resulting in a 60% reduction in carbon emissions,” the clean energy company said in a press release.

JLR will conduct comprehensive validation studies on the pouch cells at its battery testing facilities. Production of the battery cells is planned to take place at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), the UK’s national battery manufacturing scale-up facility, using recovered battery materials produced by Altilium at its new mini-commercial ACT2 facility, as well as its ACT1 pilot, both in Devon.
This initiative aligns with JLR’s recent moves towards bolstering its electric vehicle production. Earlier this month, JLR announced plans to manufacture electric vehicles in India for global markets, a decision that came after years of exploring synergies between Tata Motors and JLR.
Furthermore, JLR pledged a ₹5,586 Cr investment to transform its UK factory into a hub for manufacturing electric SUVs, making it JLR's first-ever all-electric manufacturing unit.
