Tata Steel has commissioned India’s largest blast furnace at Kalinganagar, Odisha, marking a major expansion in the company’s crude steel capacity. The announcement was made on Friday evening.
What Happened: With an investment of ₹27,000 crore, the Phase II expansion at Kalinganagar will increase the site’s total capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The inauguration was led by T V Narendran, CEO and managing director, of Tata Steel.
The new blast furnace will significantly enhance the plant’s overall production capabilities, enabling Tata Steel to cater to the increasing demands of various industries, including automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defence. The expansion has positioned Odisha as Tata Steel’s largest investment destination in India, with a total cumulated investment of over ₹1 lakh crore in the last decade.
