Star Health Hit By Massive Data Breach, Millions Of Customers' Data Leaked On Telegram: Report

Customer data from India’s largest health insurer, Star Health, has reportedly been leaked and made publicly available through chatbots on Telegram. This incident comes on the heels of accusations against the messaging app’s founder for aiding criminal activities.

What Happened: The stolen data, including medical reports, is up for sale, Reuters reported on Monday. The chatbots’ creator claimed that private details of millions of individuals were available for purchase, with samples accessible via the chatbots.

Star Health, boasting a market capitalisation of over $4 billion (₹33,402 crore), has reported the alleged unauthorised data access to local authorities. However, the company reportedly insists that “sensitive customer data remains secure”.

Reuters said that it managed to download policy and claims documents, including names, phone numbers, addresses, taxdetails, ID card copies, test results and medical diagnoses, through the chatbots.

The chatbots, attributed to a user named “xenZen”, have been functional since at least August 6, the report said citing Jason Parker, a UK-based security researcher. Parker, posing as a potential buyer on an online hacker forum, discovered xenZen’s claim of possessing 7.24 terabytes of data related to over 31 million Star Health customers.

After being approached by an unidentified person claiming to have access to some of its data on August 13, Star Health reported the issue to the cybercrime department of its home state of Tamil Nadu and the federal cybersecurity agency CERT-In.

Despite Telegram spokesperson Remi Vaughn‘s assertion that sharing private information on Telegram is strictly prohibited and is removed whenever discovered, new chatbots offering Star Health data have since surfaced.
