An executive from Reliance Industries declined the offer to buy the domain name “JioHotstar.com” from a Delhi-based app developer, the techie wrote on the website. The developer had anticipated the sale to finance his tuition fees for an EMBA program.

What Happened: The app developer, who had acquired the domain name in 2023, speculated that Reliance might acquire Disney+ Hotstar and rebrand it as JioHotstar, akin to the JioSaavn rebranding.

He believed the domain name would be an apt brand name for the merged entity, preserving the brand equity of both brands and ensuring a smooth transition for the current users of both sites.

However, as per the latest update shared by the techie on the website, Ambujesh Yadav, an executive at Reliance Industries, declined the request for £93,345 (₹1.01 crore), equivalent to the tuition fees for the EMBA program. Instead, the company has decided to take legal action. An email sent to Jio for comment on the matter was not answered at the time of publishing

The developer, who had hoped that the sale of the domain would be a minor expense for a multi-billion dollar company like Reliance but a life-changing event for him, is now seeking legal help, fearing he might lose access to the domain.
