MapMyIndia CEO Rohan Verma has labelled Ola’s newly launched navigation map for India as nothing more than a “gimmick”. Ola, on its part, has rejected these accusations, terming them as “unfounded”.
What Happened: In a PTI Interview, Verma voiced scepticism about Ola’s assertion that its map, named Ola Maps, was developed by Geospoc, a startup bought by Ola’s parent firm, ANI Technologies.
He contended that the development of a digital navigational map for a country as large as India necessitates substantial investment and expertise, which he thinks Geospoc doesn’t possess.
Verma also downplayed any potential threat to MapmyIndia’s business from Ola Maps, doubting the quality of Ola’s offering. “We don’t see a business risk because we don’t see a good product coming from there,” he stated.

In July, MapmyIndia sent a legal notice to Ola, accusing the company of violating the terms of a license agreement inked in 2021 for the usage of MapmyIndia’s technology for navigation.
In retaliation, an Ola spokesperson denied the allegations and charged MapmyIndia of attempting to maintain its relevance by defaming its rivals. “Ola stands by the integrity of its business and will take all steps needed to protect its interests,” the spokesperson declared.
Verma also voiced apprehensions about Ola’s purported use of OpenStreetMap data in the development of Ola Maps, cautioning users about the accuracy of such maps.
Ola’s shares have surged 20% to hit the upper circuit on its second session, extending its gains from listing day.
