IITians are revered for several reasons. While making it into the prestigious institution itself is considered a massive achievement, being one of the top ten rank-holders in their respective entrance exams adds an extra layer of honour.
It is a testament to their exceptional academic prowess and dedication, but perhaps that holds true for most who take the examination every year.
In a thread on micro-blogging platform X, a user who goes by the name Deedy shared an account of how the top IIT-JEE rank-holders from 1992 are faring 32 years later.
The first rank-holder of the year, Anil Ruia, completed his bachelor’s in technology from IIT Bombay. He went on to pursue his MS in Computer Science from Princeton and Rutgers. He's been a Microsoft loyalist ever since then and has been working at the firm for more than 25 years.

The third rank-holder, Sashikumar Venkataraman, ditched IIT for the revered Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But as fate would have it, he returned to IIT Bombay to earn his PhD. Venkataraman's app "Where is my train" briefly went viral in 2018 before it was acquired by Google in December of that year. He's been associated with Google since then. Interestingly, he also ranked third in the IIT-JEE examination in 1991.
Geeta Arora (Tarachandani), the fifth rank-holder, was the only woman among the top rank-holders that year. She completed her B.Tech in computer science from IIT Kanpur and was the recipient of the honorary President’s Gold Medal.
She further completed her MS from the University of Texas, Austin. After dedicating more than 22 years to tech firm Oracle, she's now running her company where she helps students in college admissions.
Arvind Jain ranked sixth that year. He completed his B.Tech from IIT Delhi and earned his Masters from the University of Washington. He had an 11-year stint at Google where he directly reported to Larry Page, the former CEO of Google. He currently owns a $7 billion (₹58,773 crore) firm and is the only billionaire on the list.
"This is not meant to be a success test, but a small sample of how life unfolds for those who at some moment believed they were at the top of the totem pole. Usually, we know only about rank 1s!" Deedy, added in the thread.
