Apple To Assemble iPhone 16 Pro Models In India: Report

Apple Inc. is set to manufacture its high-end iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in India, through its partner Foxconn, thereby diversifying its production beyond China.

What Happened: Apple is planning to assemble the top-tier Pro and Pro Max models of its upcoming iPhone 16 series in India, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing presence in the country, reported Moneycontrol. The production will be conducted via Foxconn, Apple’s long-standing partner.

Apple has been consistently enhancing its manufacturing capabilities in India. “This year, Apple will manufacture the Pro and Pro Max models in India to ensure the India-assembled iPhone 16 Pro models are available in the country post-launch,” a source privy to the matter informed Moneycontrol.

Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is set to kickstart the ‘new product introduction’ (NPI) process for the pro models of iPhone 16. The mass production phase will begin once the phone is launched.

Apple, which commands a 6% share of India’s smartphone market, is predicting high demand for its iPhone 16 series, slated to launch in September. The tech giant is gearing up with 9 crore units of iPhone 16 devices for 2024 alone, marking a 10% increase from the iPhone 15 series.

Why It Matters: Apple’s decision to increase production in India is a strategic move to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China. This move is also in line with Apple’s aggressive strategy to boost production of its flagship iPhone devices in India through partnerships with Foxconn and Tata Electronics. The company aims to manufacture a quarter of all its iPhones in India over the next 3–4 years, a significant jump from the current 14% of their total iPhone production. This expansion not only strengthens Apple’s presence in India but also positions the country as a significant player in Apple’s global supply chain.
