AI chip behemoth Nvidia has reportedly begun delivering its newest chips, including the GH200 AI, to Indian partners such as Tata Communications and Jio Platforms. The move is aimed at bolstering the development of AI-cloud infrastructure in India.

What Happened: Nvidia’s South Asia managing director, Vishal Dhupar, confirmed the ongoing delivery of the chips to their partners. This development comes amidst concerns over potential delays in the delivery of the chips as companies vie for a larger piece of the AI market.

In September, Nvidia said it had inked partnerships with Reliance and Tata group companies to aid them in creating AI-powered supercomputers, AI clouds and generative AI applications. AS Lakshminarayanan, Tata Communications’ managing director and CEO, confirmed the receipt and installation of some chips.

Yotta Data Services, a data centre firm of the Hiranandani Group, received the first batch of 4,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) of H100 Tensor Core GPU from Nvidia in March. The firm has plans to expand its GPU stable to 32,768 units by the end of 2025.

The GH200 Grace Hopper platform, an advanced computing architecture by Nvidia, is specifically designed for AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and data analytics. Dhupar mentioned that the company’s focus is on solving “hard problems” for India through these collaborations and Nvidia’s technology and AI products rather than going after market share.

Nvidia, along with Intel and AMD, are keen to collaborate with the Indian government on its AI mission. These companies will participate in the forthcoming tender by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to provide GPUs for the AI computing infrastructure.

The government has set aside ₹5,000 crore to establish AI compute infrastructure in the country under the ₹10,732-crore IndiaAI Mission.
