India’s passport has climbed to the 82nd position in the Henley Passport Index 2024, enabling Indian citizens to travel visa-free to 58 countries, including popular tourist hotspots like Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand.

What Happened: The Henley Passport Index, which bases its rankings on data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), has ranked India alongside Senegal and Tajikistan.

India was reportedly at the 80th position in the June 2024 ranking list.

Singapore has clinched the top spot on the index, granting its citizens visa-free entry to a staggering 195 countries. The United States, however, has fallen to the eighth rank, permitting its citizens visa-free travel to 186 countries.

India’s enhanced ranking allows its citizens to travel visa-free to 58 countries, including sought-after destinations like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In contrast, India’s neighbour Pakistan stands at the 100th position, allowing passport holders access to only 33 countries.

Christian Kaelin, chair of Henley and Partners, highlighted the increasing disparity in global mobility. He pointed out that the global average number of destinations travellers can access without a visa has almost doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, the gap between the countries at the top and bottom of the index has widened more than ever before.
