TCS, Rolls-Royce Team Up To Turn Hydrogen Into Zero-Carbon Aviation Fuel

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Rolls-Royce have announced a joint venture to research hydrogen fuel system technology. The collaboration aims to establish hydrogen as a potential zero-carbon aviation fuel of the future.

What Happened: TCS and Rolls-Royce are broadening their partnership to promote sustainable initiatives, according to a regulatory filing. The primary focus of this collaboration is to explore hydrogen fuel system technology, with the goal of making hydrogen a viable zero-carbon aviation fuel.

TCS will lend its engineering expertise to Rolls-Royce. The partnership will tackle three main challenges in the quest to make hydrogen usable in aviation: fuel combustion, fuel delivery and fuel systems integration with an engine.

This collaboration is in line with TCS’s commitment to driving sustainable transformation across industries and using technology for a positive societal impact. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set ambitious targets for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, necessitating innovative sustainability solutions.

Alan Newby, Director, Research and Technology, Rolls-Royce, welcomed TCS to the hydrogen research programme, stating that their engineering skills will play a valuable role in achieving the technology goals.

TCS has been working with Rolls-Royce since 2010 in various areas such as design, manufacturing engineering, control systems and software, after-market services as well as IT services.
