Sudha Murty, wife of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, made a her debut in Rajya Sabha, zeroing in on two vital issues: cervical cancer prevention and the promotion of domestic tourism.

What Happened: Murty, a noted philanthropist, passionately advocated for a government-sponsored vaccination program to combat cervical cancer in girls aged nine to 14.

“Prevention is better than cure,” she declared, underscoring that early vaccination could prevent this deadly disease. Drawing parallels to India’s successful Covid vaccination drive, she stressed that rolling out a similar program for cervical cancer could be a game-changer.

"The government has handled a massive vaccination drive during Covid, so managing this will not be very difficult," Murty highlighted. She pointed out that while the vaccine currently costs ₹1,400, government intervention could slash this to ₹700-800, making it accessible to many more.

“We have 42 World Heritage sites, but we should care about those 57 pending sites,” she said, listing iconic spots like the Bahubali statue in Karnataka, Lingaraja Temple, and the Mughal gardens of Kashmir.

She highlighted the potential of these sites to attract tourists and boost revenue if properly packaged with good infrastructure, including toilets and roads. “Tourists will flock if we make these sites convenient and appealing,” she noted.

Murty also pointed out that the design of the old Parliament Building was inspired by the ancient Chausath Yogini temple in Madhya Pradesh, underscoring India’s rich architectural heritage. She mentioned other notable sites like the Shivaji forts in Maharashtra, Unakoti rock carvings in Tripura, and the temples in Srirangam, which she described as “marvellous.”
