Britannia, in an exchange filing on Tuesday, informed that the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Tiruvallur has ordered it to pay a total fine of ₹55,000.

What Happened: A consumer named Muni Dhayanidhi from Surapet fell ill after consuming a packet of Marie Gold biscuits that was still within its expiry period, as detailed in a Times of India report. She found a live worm in one of the packets, which resulted in severe stomach pain and vomiting and was also hospitalised for treatment. Dhayanidhi lodged a complaint with Britannia, who acknowledged the issue but did not send a representative for sample collection.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Tiruvallur, held Britannia accountable for deficient service. The company was directed to pay a compensation of ₹50,000 for the mental agony and hardship caused to Dhayanidhi, along with an additional ₹5,000 towards litigation expenses.

Despite Britannia’s claims of stringent quality control measures, the forum observed the lack of any substantial evidence from the company to back its assertions. The court concluded that Britannia was responsible for the mental and physical hardship suffered by Dhayanidhi.

Last month, the FMCG giant, in conjunction with a local bakery, was ordered by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Thrissur, Kerala, to pay ₹60,000 as compensation to a consumer who was sold biscuit packets that were reportedly 52 grams lighter than the weight claimed on the packaging.
