RVNL is all set to bridge the 125-metre viaduct gap in the New Garia-Airport corridor. This comes after the acquisition of the much-awaited site at Metropolitan on EM Bypass.
What Happened: The girder-launching for the remaining 100m beyond the Metropolitan metro station is scheduled to start on Friday night, as per a Times of India report. This is a necessary step for operations beyond Ruby. Concurrently, Kolkata Police have begun traffic trials for vehicle diversion after barricading around the two unfinished piers, 288 and 289.
The traffic trials, set to last five days, will then extend to a 90-day traffic block. This is to aid the construction of the two portal piers, which have been half-completed for several months. RVNL, responsible for implementing the 29km New Garia-Airport (Orange) line on the western side of EM Bypass near the Metropolitan crossing, has cordoned off an area of 5.5m around the two portal piers and is rerouting traffic along the road it expanded.

Last year, RVNL managed to construct half of the two-legged piers when a traffic block was granted. The work is projected to be finished by Pujas, after which the site will be returned to the police.
The site at Metropolitan crossing is urgently needed by RVNL to fill the gap as it plans to promptly launch the Orange line's 4.5km extension to Metropolitan. The construction of the viaduct till Pier 287 will be executed on weekends and is anticipated to be completed in the next two months, officials stated.
