Jindal Stainless announced the company has supplied high-strength stainless steel for the first Vande Metro train. This project is aimed at enhancing inter-city travel services across the nation.

What Happened: According to a press release on May 14, 2024, the Vande Metro involved the use of a tempered 201LN grade of high-strength stainless steel supplied by Jindal Stainless. The Vande Metro train is a shorter-distance version of the Vande Bharat Express. According to the company, the external panels of the trainsets have been slimmed down from 3 mm to 2 mm, leading to lighter, more energy-efficient, and cost-effective trains. The stainless steel 201LN grade offers high corrosion resistance, superior strength, enhanced durability, and improved crash-resistant properties, ensuring top-tier safety for passengers.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed his pride in contributing to the modernisation of India’s railway infrastructure. He voiced his confidence that the Vande Metro trains will provide a world-class experience to passengers while reducing the carbon footprint of the Indian Railways.

Why It Matters: The Vande Metro is designed to serve urban commuters travelling distances up to 250 km. It is expected to connect over 120 cities across the nation. The train is set to be launched in July this year, with initial routes including Chennai-Tirupati, Bhubaneswar-Balasore, Agra-Mathura, Delhi-Rewari, and Lucknow-Kanpur.
