What India Ordered The Most For Moms: Mother's Day Sales Eclipse Traditional Holidays On Zomato, Swiggy Instamart

On Mother's Day, Zomato and Swiggy Instamart experienced record-breaking order volumes, surpassing those seen on New Year’s Eve.

What Happened: Deepinder Goyal, Zomato’s co-founder and CEO, shared on social media that Mother's Day unexpectedly eclipsed New Year’s Eve in sales volume, expressing hope that the day would proceed smoothly for all customers celebrating their mothers.

Zomato’s Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart saw increased demand for gifts such as chocolates, roses, and handbags, with Blinkit successfully adding handbags to their offerings just in time for the holiday.

Albinder Dhindsa, CEO of Blinkit, noted significant spikes in sales of smartwatches, jewellery, and perfumes, with flower bouquet sales surpassing those of Valentine’s Day.

Swiggy Instamart’s CEO, Phani Kishan, reported varying popular orders across cities, with roses leading in Bangalore and Mumbai, while other cities favoured chocolates, plants, cakes, and perfumes. Kishan anticipated that the day's sales might set a new record, potentially outdoing other major days like Valentine’s Day and Holi.

This surge in orders wasn’t confined to Zomato and Swiggy.

The ride-hailing company Ola and Magicpin, an e-commerce platform backed by Zomato, also joined forces under the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to deliver food items on Mother’s Day. T Koshy, CEO of ONDC, highlighted the successful collaboration between Ola and Magicpin, emphasizing the initiative’s capacity to compete with major players in the market.
