Deepu Ojha, an 8th grade dropout from Bihar, has bagged a whopping ₹1.5 crore on the Dream11 IPL Fantasy App, despite having no knowledge of cricket.

What Happened: As per an Indiatimes report, Ojha, hailing from Kohda village in Bihar’s Arrah district, clinched the cash prize while engaging in IPL fantasy gaming during the KKR vs RCB IPL match last Sunday. Working as a car mechanic in a local garage, Ojha managed to secure victory by choosing Andre Russell as the captain of his team.

“I felt very good. Could not believe. Thought it was fraud and no money ever comes on such apps. I work in a garage. I have been playing fantasy gaming for the last six months. On Sunday, I had no work and made the team. I saw it was a match between KKR and RCB. I had little knowledge about the players,” Ojha told PTI.

What’s Next: Ojha, still unsure about how to spend his newfound wealth, admitted his lack of cricket knowledge and credited his victory to luck. Dream11, an Indian fantasy sports platform, enables users to assemble virtual teams of real-life players and earn points based on the performances of these players in real games.

Why It Matters: This is not the first instance of such a win. In 2023, Shahabuddin Mansuri, a driver from Madhya Pradesh’s Barwani district, won ₹1.5 crore by investing just ₹49 in an online gaming app. However, not all tales have a happy ending. In the same year, Somnath Jhende, a sub-inspector with Pune Police, faced suspension from duty after winning ₹1.5 crore in the online game Dream11 due to alleged misconduct. These incidents highlight the growing popularity of online gaming platforms like Dream11 and underscore the need for responsible gaming practices.
