Meta Begins Rolling Out Its AI Chatbot To Instagram, WhatsApp Users: Here's What It Can Do

Meta has launched a limited rollout of its large language model-powered chatbot, ‘Meta AI,’ to select WhatsApp and Instagram users in India who have updated their apps to the latest iOS and Android versions.

What Happened: Over the weekend, Meta quietly introduced its AI-powered chatbot on WhatsApp, and some users also noticed it on Instagram, using the search function to access it.

On WhatsApp, users can identify the Meta AI option by a blue circle icon above the new chat icon in the bottom right corner or by tapping the search bar at the top of the ‘Chats’ tab. Instagram users can access it by tapping on the search tab at the bottom of the home screen and then the search bar at the top.

What is Meta AI and what does it do?

Meta AI was unveiled in September last year during the Meta Connect 2023 event with the company keenly committed to adding a generative AI experience to all its social media applications like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

A chatbot, similar to Claude and ChatGPT, it utilizes Meta’s in-house generative text model, Llama 2, and its large language model research to provide quick responses. Meta has also partnered with Microsoft's Bing to incorporate real-time information in conversations, enabling the chatbot to conduct text conversations, link sources, fetch the latest internet data, and generate images.

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that it is still developing its AI-powered generative AI experiences and has released them to the public on a limited scale.
