Chipset rivals Qualcomm and MediaTek are reportedly stepping up their competition beyond smartphones into India’s automotive sector, aiming to attract customers in both four- and two-wheeler segments with their latest offerings.

What Happened: Qualcomm, headquartered in California, has been collaborating with Indian automotive companies for some time, Moneycontrol reported. Meanwhile, Its Taiwanese competitor, MediaTek, is set to secure its first customer in India’s growing electric vehicle space.

Qualcomm is making robust investments in India, collaborating with all major four- and two-wheeler OEMs with the goal of working closely with manufacturers to improve automotive experiences using its flagship Snapdragon digital chassis systems, Savi Soin, president of Qualcomm India, told the business daily.

Recently, Qualcomm announced partnerships with Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and TVS to accelerate digitisation in the automotive sector.

MediaTek, a newcomer to the automotive industry, anticipates significant revenue from this segment in India. It plans to announce its first partnership with a two-wheeler EV company and is in advanced discussions with four-wheeler companies, according to Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India.

Last year, MediaTek unveiled plans for this market with the launch of Dimensity Auto, targeting digital cockpit, infotainment, and telematics units.

Both Qualcomm and MediaTek have local research and development units in India to support automotive segment requirements. However, challenges may arise as OEMs and traditional car manufacturers invest in proprietary solutions for software-defined vehicles.
