Swiggy, Restaurant Hit With ₹10,000 Fine For Delivering Non-Veg Food

In a recent ruling, food delivery platform Swiggy and a restaurant were fined ₹10,000 by a consumer forum for delivering non-vegetarian food to a customer who had ordered a vegetarian dish.

What Happened: As reported by The Hindu, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Rangareddy, instructed Swiggy and a restaurant called Rolls King to pay ₹10,000 to the complainant, Shruti Baheti. Baheti claimed that she received non-vegetarian food despite ordering a vegetarian dish on September 22, 2020.

Both Swiggy and Rolls King refuted the allegations. Swiggy contended that they were not accountable for the food provided once the order was placed, while Rolls King asserted that the Vegetarian Special Roll was prepared with vegetarian ingredients. Nevertheless, the commission discovered evidence of chicken pieces in the delivered food.

The commission deemed the incident as a service deficiency and, besides the compensation, ordered the opposite party to pay ₹5,000 as costs.

Swiggy’s competitor Zomato had proposed a separate fleet for vegetarian orders. However, following an online backlash, the company scrapped the idea of a green uniform for ‘Pure Veg’ orders. Zomato’s founder, Deepinder Goyal, stated that while the company would continue to maintain a separate fleet for vegetarian orders, it would no longer segregate this fleet on the ground using the colour green. Instead, all delivery riders, including those serving vegetarian orders, would wear red uniforms.
