A Hyderabad resident’s fondness for idlis has resulted in him spending a staggering ₹7.3 lakh on the South Indian staple in the past year.

What Happened: Swiggy shared insights into the country’s idli consumption patterns on World Idli Day, observed annually on 30th March. The analysis spanned from 30 March 2023 to 25 March 2024.

Swiggy delivered millions of idli plates over the past 12 months. Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai were the top three cities ordering the most idlis, with Mumbai, Pune, Coimbatore, Delhi, Vizag, Kolkata, and Vijayawada following closely.

A Hyderabad idli lover stood out, having spent an impressive ₹7.3 lakh on idlis over the past year. The peak time for idli orders was found to be between 8 AM and 10 AM, with a surge in orders during dinner time in various cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Mumbai.

The plain idli was the favourite variant across all cities, with a plate of two pieces being the most common order. Rava Idli was particularly popular in Bangalore, while ghee/neyi karam podi Idli was favoured in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

Last year a single Swiggy user from Hyderabad had spent a whopping ₹6 lakh on ordering idlis over the last 12 months, as claimed by the food delivery platform in its analysis released on World Idli Day, celebrated on March 30 every year. The analysis, which covered the period from March 30, 2022, to March 25, 2023, provided intriguing insights into the popularity of this South Indian delicacy.

This user had ordered 8,428 plates of idlis, including orders placed for friends and family, while travelling across cities like Bengaluru and Chennai. Swiggy delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months, indicating the immense popularity of this dish among customers.
